Lightning strikes twice: Texas Tech LB records pick-6 on back-to-back plays

The Texas Tech Red Raiders haven’t exactly dominated their opposition this season. They won their first two games against FBS opponents by a combined nine points. They’re changing that on Saturday thanks to linebacker Austin Romaine.
Romaine made NCAA history for Texas Tech in Week 4 vs. the Sam Houston State Bearkats. The former Kansas State linebacker opened the second quarter against the Bearkats with back-to-back pick-sixes, becoming the third player since 2000 to pull off such a feat, per Radar360.
Oddly enough, Romaine is the first non-Duke player to pull this off in the 21st century. In 2009, Blue Devil senior cornerback Leon Wright sealed a Duke victory over Army with back-to-back pick-sixes in the final two minutes of regulation.
Four years later, freshman defensive back DeVon Edwards replicated Wright’s work — and added a kick return touchdown — in a Blue Devil win vs. NC State.
Sam Houston state closed the gap following Romaine’s historical sequence and trailed Texas Tech just 21-14 at halftime. The Red Raiders rattled off 21 consecutive points to open the second half, though, to pull away from the Bearkats. Texas Tech travels to the Colorado Buffaloes for its first Big 12 road game of the season in Week 5.
