LSU quarterback Michael Van Buren has served as Garrett Nussmeier’s backup in 2025 while putting together some solid numbers of his own. After one season, however, he is headed to the transfer portal, according to On3’s Hayes Fawcett.
Van Buren, a four-star recruit in 2024 according to 247Sports’ Composite Ratings and the nation’s No. 15 quarterback, played in seven games and started seven for the Tigers in 2025 while filling in for the injured Nussmeier. He was 94-of-151 for 1,010 yards, tossing eight touchdowns versus just two interceptions. He also ran for a score. During the Texas Bowl against Houston, he passed for 267 yards and three TDs.
As a true freshman at Mississippi State in 2024, Van Buren found himself in the starting role after an injury to Blake Shapen. He threw for 1,886 yards and 11 touchdowns while adding seven picks.
The news comes a day after news that Brendan Sorsby reportedly scheduled an official visit to LSU. Sorsby threw for 2,800 yards and 27 touchdowns while rushing for 580 yards and nine TDs in 2025 with Cincinnati.
Meanwhile, Van Buren, though he is apparently not in the plans of Lane Kiffin, reportedly will join a transfer market filled with quarterbacks as he seeks a potential starting role elsewhere.
