LSU is expected to name Frank Wilson as its interim head football coach, according to a report by Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger on Sunday night.
There is a team meeting scheduled for 9 p.m. ET, according to the Yahoo Sports report. Meanwhile, LSU and Brian Kelly are “expected to continue working toward the buyout,” in the wake of Kelly’s reported firing as head coach on Sunday night.
Wilson has previous head coaching experience. He was the head coach at UTSA (2016-19) and McNeese State (2020-21) prior to being hired by LSU in 2022.
Wilson had been LSU’s associate head coach and running backs coach. He reportedly will take the top job now at LSU during his second stint on the program’s staff. He is a local guy, being a New Orleans native, and he was one of Kelly’s first hires when Kelly left Notre Dame to take the LSU head coaching job in December 2021.
The first stint for Wilson at LSU came between 2010-15. He was the running backs coach and recruiting coordinator during that first stint, and his local connections to the New Orleans area and state of Louisiana were a huge boost in his recruiting. On Wilson’s watch, LSU had 4 top-10 recruiting classes during his first stint, including the No. 2 class in 2014.
Now, it appears that Wilson will take the lead, at least on an interim basis, of a program that has fallen on rocky times with Kelly’s sudden exit as head coach.
