Mac Jones has been named the starting quarterback in New England.

Jim McBride of the Boston Globe broke the news Tuesday morning that the Patriots are releasing Cam Newton, naming Jones their starter.

The Heisman Trophy finalist out of Alabama was picked No. 15 overall in the 2021 NFL Draft, the first time the Patriots have taken a quarterback in the first round under Bill Belichick.

Jones has impressed in preseason play, going 36-of-52 passing for 388 yards, a touchdown and no interceptions. In the 2021 preseason, Jones had the most completions and passing yards among this year’s rookie quarterback class, according to stats compiled by CBS Boston.

The Patriots open the season at home on Sept. 12 against the Miami Dolphins, setting up Jones vs. Tua Tagovailoa.
