Mac Jones reacts to Jeremiah Smith’s TD in national title game looking eerily familiar

Mac Jones helped lead the Alabama Crimson Tide to the College Football Playoff title during the COVID-impacted 2020 season. That 2020 Crimson Tide squad is considered one of the best teams of the 2000s.

In the national title game, the Tide took on Ohio State. That season, Alabama, led by coach Nick Saban, was an unstoppable force. Jones had an incredible year at QB, while WR DeVonta Smith won the Heisman Trophy.

In the 52-24 blowout win over Ohio State to clinch the natty, Jones and Smith connected on this beautifully designed pass play:

The offensive coordinator that season? Current Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian.

You can bet Saban and Sark were pleased to see Ohio State and coach Ryan Day have long memories. Current Buckeyes OC Chip Kelly dialed up an eerily similar play to get Ohio State freshman WR Jeremiah Smith into the end zone against Notre Dame on Monday night:

Jones was watching the title game and took to social media after the touchdown by Jeremiah Smith to share his reaction. He said “seen that one before”:

Saban was in the building to watch the game as part of his gig with ESPN’s College GameDay. Surely he had a smile after seeing the familiar play run successfully by another team.
