Mario Cristobal, Miami agree to long-term extension, per report

Miami football head coach Mario Cristobal has agreed to a long-term contract extension, according to On3Sports’ Brett McMurphy.
The news of an extension comes as the Canes are set to enter Year 5 under Cristobal, and just after Miami fell just short of the national championship trophy last year.
Miami finished last season 13-3, with Cristobal leading Carson Beck and the Hurricanes to the title game despite barely cracked the 12-team College Football Playoff field. Like everyone else who faced Curt Cignetti and Indiana last season, Miami fell to the Hoosiers 21-27.
Cristobal has improved upon his record each season since he first made his way back to Coral Gables after 4 seasons as Oregon’s head coach. The former Miami OT finished 5-7 in 2022, then 7-5 in 2023, 10-3 in 2024 and finally 13-3 last season with an expanded playoff. To keep this streak alive, he’d probably have to win the national title in 2026.
It’s certainly possible. The Hurricanes brought in Duke transfer Darian Mensah to lead an uber-talented offense that retains star WR Malachi Toney and RB Mark Fletcher. Replacing Akheem Mesidor and Rueben Bain’s abilities as pass rushers will certainly be difficult, however.
The Canes kick off their 2026 campaign on September 4 at Stanford.
