Mark Richt and Carson Beck don’t have a lot in common, but both know what it’s like to leave Georgia and land at Miami.
UGA parted with Richt at the end of the 2015 season. At the time, Richt wasn’t ready to retire from coaching, so he took the open job at Miami, his alma mater.
Beck and the Bulldogs also had a postseason parting of sorts. The quarterback originally declared for the draft, but then decided to withdraw and enter the NCAA transfer portal. With Miami needing a replacement for No. 1 overall draft pick Cam Ward, Beck took his talents to Coral Gables.
At UM, Beck is being handsomely compensated via NIL deals. Richt couldn’t help but notice that Beck is set to make more thanks to NIL.
“You were at Georgia, went to Miami. I was at Georgia, went to Miami. The only difference is you got paid more than I did,” Richt said, drawing laughs from Beck and the panel.
Beck wasn’t sure if Richt was joking. The former coach crunched the numbers.
“If you go year by year, I think you got me by about a million,” Richt said.
It’s wild to think about Beck making more than a College Football Hall of Fame coach, but NIL has led to some big paydays for players.
