It took more than a quarter for someone to crack the scoreboard in Saturday’s South Carolina-Missouri game. Tiger wide receiver Marquis Johnson wasn’t on the receiving end of Mizzou‘s opening touchdown, but he helped set up the Tigers’ second scoring opportunity in the frame.

Early in the second quarter, facing 3rd-and-3 from the Gamecocks’ 40-yard line, quarterback Beau Pribula had no receivers open beyond the sticks. After a pump fake, he dropped the ball off to Johnson. Pribula’s throw was a bit behind the junior receiver, but it didn’t matter. Johnson, on the run, managed to reach back and pluck the pass out of the air before sprinting up field for a gain of 18 yards.

South Carolina defensive back Myles Norwood got just enough of Johnson’s foot to prevent a potential touchdown. His effort helped the Gamecocks hold the Tigers to a 23-yard field goal on the drive, which gave Mizzou a 9-7 lead.

Johnson entered tonight’s matchup with South Carolina as the Tigers’ second-leading receiver. He had 9 catches for 173 yards and 2 touchdowns through Missouri’s first 3 games, and has 5 receptions for 55 yards in the first half today. The Tigers trail the Gamecocks 14-12 at halftime, but will receive the second half kickoff.
