Mason Heintschel played a huge role in Pittsburgh reaching 5-0 this season, but he left the game against Virginia Tech on Friday night with an injury. On Saturday, he received a brutal diagnosis as he will miss the remainder of the season due to a torn ACL.
Heintschel was putting together as good a season as any quarterback in college football this year, throwing for 1,304 yards, 14 touchdowns, and only one interception through the first five games. He had nearly as many touchdowns this year (14), as he did last season (16).
The Panthers are 5-0 on the season and look like a team that is capable of making it to the ACC Championship. With Heintschel out, the starter is expected to be Holden Geriner, who filled in for him against Virginia Tech. He was solid in the game against the Hokies, going 8-of-12 for 78 yards and one touchdown.
Geriner played his first three seasons at Auburn, and then was at Texas State last season.
Up next for Geriner and the Panthers will be a home game against North Carolina in Week 6. Kickoff for that game is scheduled for 12 p.m. ET.
