Matt Campbell delivers first sideline tirade of 2025 season after penalty on Iowa State
Iowa State is playing before anyone else in college football this season, which means head coach Matt Campbell had the opportunity Saturday morning to endear himself to college football officials before anyone else. And you can bet your Guinness lager he took that opportunity.
Following a delay of game penalty against the 22nd-ranked Cyclones in the second quarter of Saturday’s game against No. 17 Kansas State, Campbell offered some mild-mannered words of encouragement to the officiating crew.
Iowa State linebacker Cael Brezina was flagged for making “symbols that simulated the beginning of the snap.”
And Campbell absolutely blew his lid.
On the ensuing play, Kansas State quarterback Avery Johnson hit Garrett Oakley for a 20-yard completion that moved the Wildcats inside the Cyclones’ 40.
Two plays later, K-State gave the ball back to Iowa State on a fumble — the fourth combined fumble of the first half.
Kansas State and Iowa State went to the halftime break tied at 7-all. The first half of the first game of the 2025 college football season featured 5 penalties, 4 turnovers, 4 sacks, 10 tackles for loss, and a combined 5-for-16 performance on third down.
Iowa State averaged 2.9 yards per play over its first 7 possessions, fumbling twice and missing a field goal.
So, rest assured, Dublin officials. Campbell is probably frustrated with everyone, not just you.
