Miami OC calls to hold top 25 rankings until October: ‘Everything’s SEC, SEC’

The SEC is constantly loaded with a handful of ranked teams each season. Currently there’s 10 SEC teams in the AP poll, anchored by No. 1 Texas and No. 2 Georgia, followed by No. 7 Alabama, No. 8 Florida, No. 9 Ole Miss, No. 16 Mississippi State, No. 17 Tennessee, No. 24 Kentucky, and No. 25 Missouri.
However, an ACC offensive coordinator believes there’s limited value in early season rankings.
During a recent media availability session, Miami’s Shannon Dawson pleaded for perspective when assessing a team’s resume. The No. 4 Hurricanes have yet to play a ranked team and at the moment only have 1 on their schedule (At No. 3 Notre Dame).
Yet, Dawson argues that a team’s body of work can often wind up more impressive than originally perceived because of the fluctuations in the rankings.
“Everything’s SEC, SEC. They have all their teams in the top 25. Good for you. At the end of the year, half of them will be in the top 30,” Dawson said. “We can’t sit here and say, ‘hey, we play X number of top-25 teams’. We’ll count those chips up at the end of the year.”
Last season, Miami defeated a pair of SEC teams (Texas A&M and Ole Miss) in the CFP en route to reaching the national championship game. Dawson clearly isn’t ducking the SEC smoke this season either. If the opportunity presents itself again, we’ll see if the Hurricanes’ players can back up their OC’s smack talk.
