Mike Elko speaks out against lack of governance in college sports on eve of CFB season

Technically, the 2026 college football season kicks off tonight, Thursday August 27 with 13 FCS games on the schedule. The first FBS games of the 2026 season are set for this Saturday.
And for many coaches across the country, it’s hard to tell who is and who isn’t allowed to play for their football teams.
Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko is among these coaches. He spoke out against the total lack of governance and guidance that CFB coaches are receiving as it pertains to the recent influx of 5th-year eligibility drama so close to the CFB season.
Here’s what he had to say:
“It’s a statement about where we are from a governance standpoint that we are having conversations about what the rules are going to be regarding roster management on August 27 and we kick off… there’s games tonight, there’s games Saturday, and we’re not even really sure what the rules are around who can play on our teams this fall.”
