As recruiting continues to evolve, especially during a pandemic, Mike Leach has tried to move with it. This year, that includes a recruiting signing day during the season. The Mississippi State coach shared his thoughts on Wednesday’s SEC coaches media teleconference.

“Biggest thing is budgeting time,” Leach said. “All the coaches scramble around after practice, they are on the phone, they put me on the phone… It’s non-stop phone work. It’s always like this but never quite this close to proximity. The toughest thing is you want face-to-face time, which we don’t have that right now. Hope to get things back to normal as soon as possible.”

About the Early Signing Period, Leach said, “Initially I was against it but I think it’s worked out quite well.”

This week, Leach and the Bulldogs face QB Bo Nix and Auburn. Leach said Nix is scrappy, competitive, he can throw it and run.

“We have to keep him accounted for, maintain coverage as he keeps it alive back there so they don’t get behind you,” Leach said. “You have to contain him and have him accounted for.”

About the Gus Malzahn-Chad Morris offense, Leach said it’s very similar.

“They work together over the years and I think it’s a good offense, they do some good stuff with it,” Leach said. “They try to keep you off balance.”
