Mizzou receiver Logan Muckey reflects on being named a captain after beating cancer

Mizzou wide receiver Logan Muckey has run the long route from walk-on longshot to team captain.
He’s a Missouri native from Lee’s Summit, and now he’s a Missouri football team captain. In between for Muckey, there was a fight of a whole different kind that didn’t involve football. In April, he was diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer.
Muckey needed his teammates more than ever, more than when he needed them for his fight just to make the Missouri football team.
“It was a shocker for me, shock for my family, shock for my friends, my teammates. Being 22 years old, that’s not really something you want to hear about yourself,” Muckey told reporters on Tuesday, before revealing that the whole ordeal was a “blessing in disguise.”
Muckey had exactly 1 catch for 6 yards last season, and it came in the Music City Bowl victory over Iowa. That might not seem like a lot to a lot of football fans, but it’s taken a lot for Muckey just to be on the field after being a walk-on, and now it’ll mean that much more for him to be a captain in 2025 while being cancer-free.
He told reporters what it means to be named a captain after all he’s been through.
“It’s definitely the greatest honor of my life. To be able to represent this school, this university, this football team, there’s nothing like it. I grew up in Kansas City, so I’m a Missouri guy. I’ve been a Mizzou guy my entire life. Being in this situation now, words will never be able to describe it. It’s awesome,” explained Muckey, before discussing his cancer diagnosis and battle.

Muckey will take the field this fall as a senior, with a new perspective on life after beating cancer and with a new designation from the Tigers: team captain.
