Mizzou didn’t get off to the best start during its Week 6 game against Texas A&M, but its defense made sure the Aggies never got going.
The Tigers allowed just 146 yards of total offense, pulling away from the Aggies in the game’s middle quarters en route to a 27-6 win at Faurot Field.
With teammate Johnnie “DJ” Jones recovering from a heart transplant, the Tigers, donning “DJ” stickers on their helmets in his honor, recovered from a sluggish opening quarter to come away with a second straight win while handing the Aggies a third SEC loss.
Mizzou punted the ball twice in the first quarter after Austin Simmons threw an interception on the Tigers’ opening drive. But the Tigers’ QB hooked up with Cayden Lee for a 32-yard touchdown as the Tigers took a 7-3 lead two minutes into the second quarter.
After a pair of Mizzou field goals, Jamal Roberts capped a 12-play drive by punching one in from two yards out to make it 20-3 Tigers at the end of the third quarter. Roberts later scored his second of the afternoon, breaking off a 54-yarder for the exclamation point to put Mizzou ahead 27-6 with under three minutes to go in the game.
Meanwhile, the Aggies failed to generate anything offensively outside of a pair of field goals. Their best look at a touchdown came in the first quarter, after they picked off Simmons to set themselves up in the red zone. But Marcel Reed threw a pick of his own to end the threat.
Reed ended the day with just 126 passing yards and a pair of interceptions. The Aggies’ run game was dreadful, finishing with 20 yards on 22 carries. Mizzou has now allowed just 62 yards on 47 carries in its last two games.
Meanwhile, Simmons was 14-of-28 for 147 yards in the win. Roberts ended with 32 carries on 165 yards. Lee led all receivers with seven catches for 94 yards.
