South Carolina is one win away from bowl eligibility, and the Gamecocks are likely to achieve that next week against Western Carolina.
If USC makes it to the postseason, backup QB Brandon McIlwain will be forced to split his time between the gridiron and the diamond.
โWhen Brandon gets some free time here in December I expect him to go play some baseball,โ Muschamp said, per The State’s Josh Kendall. โOf course, we will be in bowl practice but with classes not in for him to be able to get his timing down as far as hitting and things are concerned.”
The overlap of seasons will come up again when the Gamecocks are in spring ball.
โAt the end of the day, if weโre in spring ball and he has an opportunity to go and help our baseball team win games, thatโs what heโs going to do,โ Muschamp said. โThatโs what we talked about in the recruiting process and thatโs the most important thing.โ
Muschamp emphasized that he’ll do what’s best for McIlwain as well as what’s best for the school.
โIf heโs an everyday contributor for (baseball coach Chad Holbrook), thatโs the most important thing,โ Muschamp said. โWe will cross that bridge when we come to it as far as how much heโll be over here. I have been through this before with other players. We will are going to do what is best for the young man and we are going to do whatโs best for South Carolina.โ
