NCAA president Charlie Baker releases statement on Donald Trump’s executive order
NCAA president Charlie Baker has issued a statement regarding Donald Trump’s new executive order related to college sports.
Trump signed the order on Thursday afternoon. It covers a few different topics, but most notably bans certain “pay-for-play” deals for college athletes from third-parties. It also includes provisions for protecting the interests of women’s sports and non-revenue sports at the collegiate level, according to the official White House fact sheet.
Shortly after the bill was signed, Baker released a statement thanking the President for taking an interest in college sports.
“The association appreciates the Trump Administration’s focus on the life-changing opportunities college sports provides millions of young people and we look forward to working with student-athletes, a bipartisan coalition in Congress and the Trump Administration to enhance college sports for years to come,” Baker wrote.
Here’s Baker’s statement in-full:
The NCAA has long asked for federal oversight as it seeks to establish firm rules regarding athlete compensation and eligibility. As Baker’s statement indicates, the NCAA may still be seeking legislation from Congress as it relates to the significant issues that still exist for the Association.
