NCAA reduces suspension for Tennessee LB Arion Carter

Tennessee linebacker Arion Carter will be able to suit up sooner than expected this season.
On Tuesday, Tennessee Athletic Director Danny White told On3Sports’ Austin Price that Carter’s impermissible benefits suspension has been reduced from 2 games to 1 game, meaning the Vols captain will sit out Week 1 against Furman and be ready to go for Week 2 against Georgia Tech.
Here’s a statement from Danny White, which he posted on social media Tuesday:
While many will argue that Carter’s suspension should be 0 games, this is absolutely a win for the Volunteers and their senior linebacker.
Carter was originally suspended 3 games for an impermissible $427 flight to a pre-draft training facility, which was considered a professional benefit. A nagging injury kept Carter from entering the draft, leading to his return to Knoxville for the 2026 season. Carter immediately parted ways with his agent and repaid him for the flight.
The NCAA suspended him anyway.
As alluded to above, the suspension was originally set for 3 games, but a Tennessee appeal worked it down to 2 games. Now, as previously mentioned, Carter will only miss Week 1 vs. Furman.
The Volunteers are set to travel to Atlanta to take on Georgia Tech in Week 2. The Yellow Jackets have a new roster in 2026 and it’s tough to tell exactly what Tennessee will be dealing with, but it’s no secret that GT wants to run the football. With a few defensive depth pieces out for the season, as well as starting safety Edrees Farooq, Carter’s absence definitely wouldn’t have gone unnoticed.
Carter collected 76 tackles for Tennessee last season alongside 1.5 sacks, 1 pass deflection and a forced fumble.
