New Florida strength coach explains why weight room has been upgraded just 4 years after remodel
New Florida strength coach Rusty Whitt isn’t fooling around. He’s getting right to work in Gainesville, so the Gators football players under new head coach Jon Sumrall can have the best possible resources to do their own work.
The 54-year-old Whitt, who like Sumrall spent the previous 2 seasons at Tulane, has reunited with Sumrall at Florida in 2026 and is taking the Gators’ weight room to another level — even though it was just remodeled in 2022. The $85 million weight room facility has received another upgrade this offseason featuring American-made Sorinex Gym Equipment.
According to a report by Zach Abolverdi of GatorsOnline, Whitt and Sumrall have “gutted” the facility with big-time upgrades that they hope will lead to better results on the field as Sumrall tries to rebuild Florida into the college football powerhouse it was under Steve Spurrier and Urban Meyer.
Whitt was asked, simply, why would he upgrade the weight room when it was just given one only a few short years ago?
“The old equipment was double-sided half racks, and they lacked the space for our players to move in and out freely and spot each other,” Whitt wrote on his social media account. “I also want our lineman to squat inside of a full cage, which now they can do. This has multiple benefits, the primary one being safety.”
The Whitt-Sumrall tandem that’s reformed in Gainesville now has a standalone football weight room facility instead of the shared weight room that they had at Tulane. That’s great, but Whitt wasn’t satisfied, and now he’s giving the 2026 roster an opportunity to have an even better workout experience in preparation for the 2026 season.
Florida is determined to get back to its rightful place of contending for the SEC championship. Here is what the Kalshi market is currently saying about the Gators’ chances among the other top teams in the SEC to do just that in Year 1 of a new coaching regime:
