New Mexico coach offers hilarious analogy while preparing for Oklahoma game

The New Mexico Lobos opened their 2026 season with home games vs. Central Michigan and Mercyhurst. This weekend, they’re headed to Norman to battle the Oklahoma Sooners. Even after his opponent’s disappointing Week 2 performance, head coach Jason Eck isn’t giving his foe any bulletin board material.
During his press conference prior to matchup with the Sooners, Eck used an incredible analogy for describing the rise in competition that Brent Venables‘ club represents for his team. In his mind, Oklahoma is akin to a fine dining establishment.
“They’re gonne be a challenge… we’re definitely stepping up in class,” Eck told reporters. “It’s kinda like we’ve been going to, like, fast food restaurants to eat. Now, all of a sudden, we got an invite to the nicest steakhouse in town. And you’re checking your wallet to make sure you have enough to cover it cause you don’t want to be embarrassed.”

The Sooners struggled in an environment that’s, at worst, on par with their own last Saturday when they fell 17-10 on the road to the Michigan Wolverines.
John Mateer and Co. hope a return to friendly confines will help them right the wrongs that plagued them in Ann Arbor. Eck’s Lobos, though, have other ideas.
New Mexico and Oklahoma kickoff at 7:30 p.m. E.T. on Saturday (ESPN2).
