Tennessee star cornerback Jermod McCoy is still on the board heading into Day 3 of the 2026 NFL Draft. An NFL insider is now revealing why that’s the case.

Yahoo Sports’ Charles Robinson has learned that McCoy has a bone plug, which is a piece of bone and cartilage used to repair a degenerative cartilage. It appears the bone plug could have to be replaced again eventually as well.

“Now there’s a thought process amongst doctors that this is now going to have to be replaced,” Robinson said. “Maybe not immediately but at some point in the future.”

There’s even the unfortunate possibility that McCoy’s pro career could be cut short.

“I had one team tell me that if there’s a severe slip, it’s because some teams are taking the position that if this next surgery, which would likely knock him out for the entirety of a year, is not successful, it would effectively end his career,” Robinson said.

The 20-year-old McCoy was a second-team All-American in 2024 but missed all of last season with a torn ACL. Robinson believes the Dallas Cowboys could be a landing spot for McCoy because their team doctor Dan Cooper is extremely knowledgeable with these procedures.

“If they do the dice roll on it it’s because they have the foremost expert on their staff that has handled a number of these bone plug surgeries,” Robinson said.

Coverage for Day 3 of the NFL Draft will begin at 12 p.m. ET on Saturday afternoon.
