Nick Saban and Justin Thomas have had a close friendship for years, as they often text one another during big events in golf and football.
The Alabama coach and PGA Tour golfer got together this week ahead of The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass where Thomas is the defending champion. Thomas helped Saban read putts, and suggested angles on how to play certain holes.
“My expectation today was to hit a few in the water, which I didn’t disappoint,” Saban said of the 3 balls that found the water.
Saban discussed various strategies to score on the course, and he and Thomas recalled some of Thomas’ better shots last year that helped him win the tournament.
“I give him the same speech I give our team,” Saban said. “When we win the national championship, everybody says you’ve got to defend. There’s no such thing as defending a title, in my opinion. Because they don’t take it away from you. You know if they took it away from you, it’d be different. But you’re always going to be a Players champion, and you’re always going to have that special place in the locker room. So just go have fun and win it again.”
Added Thomas, “There you go, I like that.”
