Nick Saban is liking what he’s seen from a certain freshman QB throughout camp. That freshman is Dylan Lonergan, per Nick Kelly of Tuscaloosa News.
The 247Sports Composite ranked Lonergan as the No. 13 QB and No. 13 prospect out of Georgia from the 2023 class. He was a former 4-star QB who hails from Snellville, Georgia.
Saban was quoted saying Lonergan has great potential and ability.
“He’s done really well,” Saban said Saturday. “He shows great ability, great potential. You have experiences, you make mistakes, you mess up. You say, ‘I’m not going to do that again.’ That’s how you learn and progress.”
While Lonergan is showing good signs at camp, Saban still wants to see the Alabama QB develop more.
“He’s a talented guy and certainly a guy we want to continue to develop,” Saban said, “But he’s done a nice job so far in camp.”
Saban has not announced Alabama’s starting QB just yet. The Crimson Tide’s first game of 2023 will be with MTSU on Sept. 2.
Whoever wins the starting job will be replacing the hole left by Bryce Young. Young was taken No. 1 overall by the Carolina Panthers in the 2023 NFL Draft.
Alabama’s season opener kicks off at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN.
