Nick Saban gave out some coaching wisdom at Wednesday’s teleconference.
He shared what three elements a defensive back needs to be great. Being a great defensive back comes down to playing man to man, playing the ball on the deep part of the field, and being a good tackler.
“Thatโs just part of the mindset, that sometimes corners think theyโre cover guys first. But with all the perimeter runs you see in college football, whether itโs advantage throws or people running sweeps on the perimeter, double cracking people, got to be able to crack replace and one of the 3 elements of being a good player in the secondary is you got to play man to man, you got to play the ball on the deep part of the field, but youโve also got to be a good tackler. This is something that we emphasize early and often in a guyโs development early in his career and I think our guys have done a pretty good job of that so far.”
Saban has coached some really good defenses at Alabama during his tenure. It’s safe to say that he knows what he’s talking about when it comes to the defensive backs.
