Nick Saban doesn’t have an issue with the College Football Playoff expanding, but he thinks 16 would be the perfect number.

During an appearance on ‘The Pat McAfee Show’, Saban did say the one concern he does have with 24 teams is the number of games that the teams are going to end up playing.

“My only concern about the 24-team College Football Playoff is the amount of games these guys are playing,” Saban said. “I get a little concerned about how much is too much when it comes to how many games a college player plays … I think 16 would be a good compromise for the College Football Playoff.”

For a team to ultimately win a national championship, a team could potentially be looking at 18 or 19 games in a season. Compare that to the NFL, where the Super Bowl champion plays a maximum of 21 games.

When LSU won the national championship in 2019-2020, the Tigers went 15-0. With the potential for 19 games, that is another quarter of a season where players could become injured.

While Saban is voicing his concerns, everything is pointing towards a 24-team playoff in 2027.
