Notre Dame extends lead over Georgia with kickoff return TD to open 3rd quarter
Notre Dame is taking on Georgia in the Sugar Bowl on Thursday night. Both teams got off to slow starts, with no points scored in the first quarter.
However, the Irish got going late in the 2nd quarter. Before the half, the Irish scored a field goal and then a Georgia fumble allowed the team to get another chance before halftime and the team added 7 more points.
Then, on the first action of the 3rd quarter, Jayden Harrison returned the kickoff 98 yards to the house to put the Irish up 20-3.
Harrison made some Georgia defenders miss before bouncing outside and getting past the kicker. The speedy returner went the distance for the 4th kickoff return TD of his career. It’s the 1st kickoff return TD for the Irish in 2024, who entered this game No. 88 in the country in average kickoff return yards.
With Harrison’s score, the Irish put up 17 points in 54 seconds of game time. Even with Riley Leonard struggling to get anything going through the air, the Irish are manufacturing points, which is what you have to do against a team like Georgia.
While Harrison’s return was electric, the speedy athlete has also contributed as a WR in 2024. Harrison has 17 catches for 211 yards and 1 TD in 2024, with 1 catch for 4 yards so far in the Sugar Bowl.
If the Irish can hold on against Georgia, the team will advance to the Orange Bowl against Penn State. The Nittany Lions took down Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl on New Year’s Eve.
