Some parts of the Big Ten are downright ugly. And when they’re matched up with one of the best teams in the country, look out.
According to Circa Sports, Ohio State opened as a 50.5-point favorite against Rutgers, and the total in that game is just 55. The Buckeyes are 8-1 against the spread this season, as they didn’t cover in the season opener against Florida Atlantic.
They were 42.5-point favorites last week in a 73-14 win over Maryland. Ohio State has had wide spreads much of the season, including against FAU (28), Miami-Ohio (39) and Northwestern (27).
Vegas, of course, tries to get equal money on both sides, or as much as possible, but that may be difficult even with this large number. Rutgers has already fired its coach, and is reportedly in talks to hire former coach Greg Schiano, however, a deal is not finalized.
One note for bettors could be a Buckeye look ahead as they play Penn State next week in a game which will carry a lot of weight in the Big Ten and College Football Playoff rankings. OSU also has a game at Michigan to close the regular season, which will draw plenty of attention as the Wolverines try to de-rail their rival’s national title hopes.
