Oklahoma has announced a big change to its tailgating experience for the 2025 football season.

The University will now allow tailgating on the North Oval for the first time. The area will be free and open the public on game days throughout the 2025 season.

Here’s the official announcement from Oklahoma:

In a press release, Oklahoma athletic director Joe Castiglione indicated this move was being made to compete with the top tailgating atmospheres in the SEC. ‘

“We knew that when we entered the SEC, it would just mean more,” Castiglione said in a release. “More competition, more fierce rivalries, more opportunities to engage with our fans, and more ways to show our Sooner spirit. This year it means establishing a new tailgate tradition, taking the energy and excitement of game day to the Oval. The Oval provides a centralized space for our fans to celebrate their Sooner passion, marking the next chapter in a tailgating tradition that will grow stronger each season. We can’t wait to see how our fans will respond and show out for the Sooners.”

Per the release, Oklahoma will have a “managed drop-off process” for tailgating equipment beginning at 6 p.m. the day before home football games. Fans will be able to begin tailgating at 7 a.m. on game days.

Oklahoma’s first home game of the 2025 season is slated for Aug. 30 against Illinois State.
