Oklahoma defeats New Mexico despite offensive struggles

Oklahoma was looking for a big bounce-back performance on Saturday night when the Sooners hosted New Mexico. The Sooners were able to get the 14-6 win, but the offense for a second straight week struggled to get anything going.
Going into the Big House and struggling against the Michigan defense is tough, but to follow that up with that type of performance against the Lobos at home is definitely a sign of concern.
OU’s offense averaged just 5.2 yards per play and turned the ball over 3 times in the narrow victory.

Quarterback John Mateer finished 19-of-25 for 238 yards and two touchdowns, but he also threw two interceptions. He was able to connect with wide receiver Isaiah Sategna for a 53-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to creat a little separation, but it was another disappointing night by the offense.
As bad as the passing game was, the run game was substantially worse. The Sooners ran the ball 32 times for 61 yards, and they didn’t have one carry of more than nine yards.
They were able to get the win on Saturday night, but the offense is going to have to get things figured out quickly if they want to be a contender this year. Up next for the Sooners is a road trip to Athens next week to take on the No. 2 Georgia Bulldogs, and then a matchup two weeks later against Texas.
