Oklahoma football is reportedly set to fire tight ends coach Joe Jon Finley after 5 seasons with the Sooners.

Finley, a former tight end at Oklahoma from 2004-2007, had a rough year coaching tight ends for Brent Venables’ squad this past season. The Sooners are looking to rebuild the tight ends room once again this offseason after a few down years at the position.

One of Finley’s main issues in this regard was his recruiting ability. As SoonerScoop’s George Stoia pointed out, players that were directly recruiting by Finley totaled just 9 receptions for 84 yards and 2 touchdowns across 5 seasons in Norman. Combined. Those numbers wouldn’t cut it at Ball State, much less a storied program like Oklahoma.

The one tight end that did work out at Oklahoma during Finley’s tenure – Jaren Kanak – was a converted linebacker. Still, Kanak totaled 44 receptions for 517 receiving yards this past season for the Sooners.

As for Finley, he’ll be looking for a new landing spot after his 4th SEC job. Finley started his college coaching career at Baylor in 2015 before taking assistant roles coaching tight ends at Missouri (3 seasons), Texas A&M (1 season) and Ole Miss (1 season).
