Oklahoma football cancels non-conference game previously scheduled for 2028

On Wednesday, FBSchedules.com reported that the Oklahoma Sooners have canceled their non-conference matchup against Colorado State that was previously scheduled for the 2028 season. The cancellation was mutual, according to the report.
Colorado State was set to travel to Norman after an agreement was originally signed in 2023 and scheduled for Sept. 30, 2028. The game would have paid $1.8 million to Colorado State.

While no reason was provided for the cancellation according to FBSchedules.com, it doesn’t take much to connect this to the SEC’s recent installment of a 9-game conference schedule.
The Sooners were overscheduled by 1 game following the implementation of the new scheduling system, so they had to shed a game to keep the schedule intact. As it currently stands, Oklahoma is slated for 2028 non-conference matchups against Temple, Missouri State, and Houston.
Oklahoma’s 2028 schedule, then, is filled to capacity. The Sooners are set for 4 SEC home matchups and 4 SEC away matchups plus their annual rivalry contest against Texas in Dallas. Oklahoma will face Florida, Georgia, Mississippi State and Ole Miss at home with road contests at Kentucky, Missouri, South Carolina, and Texas A&M.
