Oklahoma might very well not win Saturday afternoon’s game at No. 2 Georgia, thanks to an ugly 1st half that saw it go into the locker room down 28-0.
But the now unranked Sooners aren’t going to get shut out between the hedges, and Rocky Beers made sure of that. On a 3rd-and-6 play from the Bulldogs’ 17-yard line, with still over 10 minutes left in the 3rd quarter, the senior tight end caught a pass while wide open on the left side and with some fancy footwork danced around a Georgia defender to get to the corner of the end zone.
Yes, Oklahoma was still trailing, 28-6, after the 17-yard catch-and-run TD pass from John Mateer, and, yes, the 2-point conversion that followed failed.
But at least it was something for the Sooners to hang their hats on as everything else was going against them on Saturday in Athens.

After a Georgia punt, Oklahoma had a chance to cut into the Bulldogs’ lead a little more, but unfortunately this time Beers was on the opposite end of the emotional spectrum, fumbling the ball back to the Dawgs after catching a pass from Mateer.
Georgia turned the fumble into a field goal and a 31-6 lead, and suddenly the brief momentum for the Sooners was gone, and it looked like any chance of a frantic comeback just wasn’t going to be possible for OU.
Oklahoma is fighting an uphill battle on Saturday in Athens, and it’ll really be fighting an uphill battle in the SEC title discussion if it loses its 2nd game of the season and SEC opener.
