The No. 5 Oklahoma Sooners have been on fire to start the 2025 campaign, and their revamped offense has been a massive driver for all of their early success.
Led by star quarterback John Mateer and upstart offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle, the Sooners have regained much of the offensive prowess they once had under former head coach Lincoln Riley.
Mateer has rocketed to the top of most Heisman Trophy rankings through the first five weeks of action, and his play caller has also begun to garner some serious hype as a potential candidate to fill one of the many head coaching vacancies that have started cropping up across the sport.
While Arbuckle is sure to receive some serious interest from several programs come season’s end, though, Oklahoma insider Mason Young reports that the young OC’s only priority is coaching the team he is currently a part of.
“I’m flattered that someone would say that about me, but none of that stuff registers in my head at all,” Arbuckle said. “I have a responsibility to this university and these kids.”
It’s clear that Arbuckle’s only worry right now is helping guide the Sooners back to the College Football Playoff come season’s end, and he’s certainly done a great job in this regard so far.
Whether or not he’ll be able to resist the opportunity to become a head coach once Oklahoma’s season is over, though, will be an entirely different conversation.
