The Kentucky Wildcats and Oklahoma Sooners picked up huge wins in Week 6. Will Stein’s team beat the LSU Tigers 35-34 in overtime, while Brent Venables’ squad defeated the arch-rival Texas Longhorns 27-24 on a walk-off 47-yard field goal from Tate Sandell.
Kentucky (5-1, 3-1 SEC) rose to No. 15 in the AP poll with its victory. The Wildcats have two top-10 triumphs on their resume — at No. 10 Texas A&M, vs. No. 10 LSU — but are not expected to beat the Sooners. Circa Sports’ opening line for the Kentucky-Oklahoma matchup is Sooners -6.5, with a game total of 44 points.
The Wildcats beat both the Aggies (+17.5) and Tigers (+8.5) despite closing as multi-possession underdogs. Kentucky (+2.5) was also a slight dog against South Carolina, giving Stein and Co. three outright wins as the underdog. Oklahoma (3-2, 1-1 SEC) is 2-1 outright on the season as a betting favorite.
Kentucky has yet to play a game that finished with fewer than 52 total points this year. The Sooners, meanwhile, have gone under the Week 7 game’s projected 44-point total twice: a 17-10 loss at Michigan and a 14-6 win over New Mexico.
Stein’s offensive mind matching up against Venables’ defensive chops should present an entertaining chess match at 7:00 p.m. E.T. on Saturday, Oct. 17 (ESPN).
