Oklahoma’s quarterback situation has been a key talking point as the 2025 season draws closer. And on Thursday, the Sooners reportedly added another player to the QB room.

Gavin Frakes, who most recently was part of the Virginia program, will transfer to Oklahoma, according to Rivals.com’s Parker Thune. Frakes is originally from Norman and was the starter at Norman North High School as a senior.

He signed with New Mexico State out of the 2022 recruiting class and started in 5 games as a true freshman. Following the season, he entered the transfer portal and joined Virginia, where he failed to see any action in 2023 and 2024. Frakes then entered the transfer portal once more in April, opening the door to join his hometown college program.

Oklahoma is looking for massive improvement after struggling to a 6-7 mark in 2024, its second sub-.500 record in 3 seasons under Brent Venables and matching its 2022 win total. To add context, before 2022, the Sooners hadn’t had a losing season since 1998.

Jackson Arnold opened 2024 as the starter but struggled, with true freshman Michael Hawkins Jr. seeing playing time at various points of the season as a result. Arnold ultimately transferred to Auburn while the Sooners added John Mateer (Washington State) from the portal.
