After tons of speculation over the past couple of seasons, the Mike Gundy domino has finally been knocked over at Oklahoma State, which means that the first big opening of the 2025 coaching carousel is now open.
This will be the first time in 21 years that the Cowboys have embarked on a coaching search, and they’re sure to draw interest from several top assistants and Group of 5 head coaches over the next few months.
CBS Sports analyst Chris Hummer has just released a list of the top names expected to be in the mix for the top job at Oklahoma State, which includes multiple coaches with ties to the SEC.
One of the bigger names that Hummer mentions is former Kansas State star quarterback and Heisman Trophy finalist/current Texas A&M offensive coordinator Collin Klein. Klein is one of the fastest-rising young coaches in America, and many believe he is in line for a head coaching gig in the very near future.
Another name that Hummer mentions is former Missouri Tigers and current Purdue Boilermakers head coach Barry Odom, who improved his stock as a head coach after a successful stop at UNLV. Odom notably has deep recruiting ties to the talent-rich southwest region from which the Cowboys receive most of their talent.
Other names that Hummer mentions include current Texas State head coach GJ Kine, Miami OC Shannon Dawson, Atlanta Falcons OC Zach Robinson, and North Texas head coach Eric Morris.
The person that the Cowboys end up picking as their next head coach will receive the opportunity of a lifetime and could very well be one of the names Hummer mentions on his list.
Whoever is eventually tabbed to fill Gundy’s shoes will undoubtedly be living in a pretty big shadow, but they’ll also have the opportunity to continue building on one of the best legacies any coach has left behind at a school.
