Oklahoma knocked off No. 1 Texas 27-24 at the Cotton Bowl on Saturday evening.
The Sooners, who were significant underdogs entering the game, overcame a double-digit deficit in the second half to defeat their chief rivals at the Texas State Fair.
Oklahoma kicker Tate Sandell provided the game-winning kick — a 47-yard field goal at the buzzer. Sandell, who won the Lou Groza Award in 2025, missed from 52 yards earlier in the game but redeemed himself with the game on the line:
Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer led the game-winning field goal drive with a couple of big completions along the sideline to receiver Isaiah Sategna.
OU was in position to win thanks to a pair of fourth-quarter interceptions from Arch Manning. First was a pick-6 thrown to Peyton Bowen that gave Oklahoma its first lead of the game. Then, Manning was picked off by Courtland Guillory in the final minute to give the Sooners another chance to win in regulation.
Offensively, Lloyd Avant was the breakout star for Oklahoma — he rushed for 72 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries. That was Oklahoma’s first offensive touchdown in this series since 2023.
For Texas, the Longhorns suffer their first lost of the season. It’s a disappointing result for a UT program that had a chance to win 3 straight against Oklahoma for the first time since 1999.
