Mike Gundy may have the best mullet in the nation among all college football coaches but his recent comments regarding Ole Miss in the 2016 Sugar Bowl seemed a bit out of place.

If you missed what the Oklahoma State head coach had to say, Gundy chimed in with these thoughts following the NCAA’s latest notice of allegations against the Ole Miss program:

“We’ll never know what we could have done in the Sugar Bowl if it was a level playing field,” Gundy said. “That is the truth. I’m not sure we would have won the Sugar Bowl, but we’ll never know.”

If you don’t remember the game well, it was not even remotely close. In fact, Ole Miss had a 34-6 lead at halftime in the eventual 48-20 rout of the Cowboys. It’s also worth noting Oklahoma State rode into the Sugar Bowl following a 10-point loss at home against Baylor and a 35-point home loss to archrival Oklahoma. OSU’s non-conference slate that season included heavyweights Central Michigan, Central Arkansas, and UTSA.

Meanwhile, Ole Miss beat Alabama on the road that season and only failed to reach the SEC Championship Game after the overtime loss to Arkansas, in which the Razorbacks had to convert one of the more remarkable fourth and 25 plays that the game has ever seen and two two-point conversion attempts.

Given the opportunity to respond to Gundy’s comments for the first time publicly during his introductory spring press conference Tuesday, Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze had this to say:

This round, again, goes to Ole Miss and Freeze.
