Pat McAfee, Marcus Freeman share hilarious exchange over wrestling incident
Pat McAfee hosts his own show on ESPN and is also a co-host on College GameDay, and the former punter for the Indianapolis Colts uses both platforms to inject his opinions on the sports world.
But McAfee also injects humor wherever he can find it, even if it’s a jab at a guest on one of the shows he participates in — and even if it’s on the biggest stage imaginable, like it was on Monday night during College GameDay in the leadup to the Miami-Indiana national championship collision.
The target of McAfee’s humor this time was Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman, who was making an appearance as a guest analyst after his Fighting Irish narrowly missed out on making the College Football Playoff last month. McAfee poked fun at Freeman, who was accused of battery at his son’s wrestling match earlier this month.
Now, Freeman was cleared of any wrongdoing, so McAfee could afford to poke fun. St. Joseph’s County Prosecutor’s Office in Indiana declined to press charges against Freeman, after New Prairie High School assistant coach Chris Fleeger filed a police report that alleged Freeman pushed him after a match in which Freeman’s son, Vinny, was participating in.
McAfee’s focus was Miami head coach Mario Cristobal when asking this question of Freeman:
“Mario Cristobal and you fight, what happens you think?” asked McAfee, as laughter overtook the entire ESPN set, including Freeman.
“You know, I just turned 40. I’m done, I’m retired,” responded Freeman with a smirk, knowing where McAfee was going with his question.
“We don’t do any fighting?” shot back McAfee.
Here is the entire hilarious exchange between McAfee and Freeman, who by the way turned 40 on Jan. 10:
