Florida State edge rusher Patrick Payton is set to enter the transfer portal, according to a recent report from On3’s Hayes Fawcett.
The 6-foot-5, 250-pounder will bring a lot to the table for his next team, including a strong level of production that can be expected to be continued elsewhere. Payton, over three seasons with the Seminoles, tallied 109 tackles, 16 sacks, 12 passes defended and 3 forced fumbles. He also earned high conference honors, named 2022 ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year. He will have 1 year of eligibility remaining at his next destination.
He originally signed with Florida State as a 4-star recruit in the 2021 class, and was one of the most important contributors in that iconic 2023 season that really put the squad on the radar.
The move by Payton to enter the transfer portal is one the Seminoles have seen a lot of after Mike Norvell’s team experienced a fall from grace, nowhere near meeting the expectations for the 2024 season as they finished out with a 2-10 overall record. The Noles finished dead last in the conference after they were expected to be contend for the ACC title this season.
It will be interesting to see both where Payton lands and if FSU is able to bounce back with a pivotal offseason ahead.
