Paul Finebaum reacts to controversial Michigan Hail Mary victory

The Michigan Wolverines escaped by the slimmest of margins on Saturday night at home against Western Michigan.

A controversial decision to put 1 second back on the clock allowed the Wolverines to complete a Hail Mary to take down the Broncos 13-12.

Here’s a look at the game-winning throw by QB Bryce Underwood:

On SportsCenter on Sunday morning, SEC Network host Paul Finebaum was asked for his take on the controversial ending, and he didn’t hold back.

Finebaum was asked by SportsCenter host Jay Harris on Sunday morning what word he’d use to describe Michigan’s victory, and he chose “gobsmacking”:

“I’m not even sure that does it, because you can’t say ‘unbelievable, I’ve never seen anything like that’ so many times, but that’s really what we’re doing,” Finebaum said. “And we’ve been doing it since late last night. The explanation from the Big Ten crew deserves an Emmy award, maybe an Oscar, maybe a lifetime achievement award. That Big Ten review crew did so well without blinking an eye. It seemed outrageous, but it doesn’t matter now. What matters is that Michigan is alive, and they need to be, because they played an absolutely abysmal game, but this Saturday at the Big House, guess what? Oklahoma comes to town and they looked great on Friday night.”

As Finebaum mentioned, the Oklahoma Sooners head to Ann Arbor in Week 2. If the Wolverines don’t improve greatly by then, things could get ugly for Michigan in front of its home crowd.
