LSU is on the hunt for a new football coach now that it has decided Ed Orgeron won’t be back in 2022.
AD Scott Woodward has a history of swinging for the fences when it comes to coaching hires, particularly with his previous football coaching hire — Jimbo Fisher at Texas A&M.
On Sunday, during an appearance on ESPN’s “College Football Podcast,” SEC Network host Paul Finebaum said he’s heard some believe that Woodward wants to hire Dabo Swinney away from Clemson (via On3 Sports):
โThere are some who believe theย AD, Scott Woodward, wants โฆ you ready for this โฆ Dabo Swinney. Now, thereโs talk that the president wantsย Mel Tuckerย (head coach atย Michigan State).ย Billy Napierย (ULLย head coach) is out there maybe as a second-tier selection if everyone else goes bust. It seems likeย Jimbo (Fisher)ย is out of that one. Canย James Franklinย pop back into these? I donโt know. But I think after yesterdayย James Franklin might be looking around saying, โWhat else can I do here?โ
โItโs a good job (Penn State) but it certainly isnโt getting any easier. Itโs not really a big deal anymore whenย Clemsonย loses, but that loss yesterday,ย Matt, I mean, that was a dagger โฆ That was a seismic loss.โ
Whoever Woodward hires will need to make a splash right away. Fans are upset after 2 lackluster seasons following the 2019 national title run.
We’ll see who Woodward brings in and if Swinney would even be interested in leaving for LSU. He denied interest in the opening last week.
