Arch Manning had a chance to drive the Texas Longhorns to a game-winning score against the Oklahoma Sooners on Saturday afternoon. He could have been the hero, but wound up being the goat after throwing a backbreaking interception.

The turnover set up Tate Sandell’s 47-yard game-winning field goal for the Sooners. In the process, it infuriated Paul Finebaum. The SEC Network personality bashed Manning’s poor decision, then criticized himself and other media members for propping Manning up before he earned his stripes.

“We showed arrogance in believing that Arch Manning could do anything,” Finebaum said on The Matt Barrie Show. “I was really troubled by how he had played up to this point… I came away thinking, ‘I donโ€™t know what this guy is going to do.’ Because he is not the elite player that we all tried to make him out to be.”

“He can be great in moments,” Finebaum continued. “He can just be downright stupid in others.”

Manning completed 61.2% (19/31) of his passes vs. Oklahoma. He made some tremendous throws, like his long touchdown tosses to Cam Coleman and Rylan Wingo, but puzzled onlooker with both interceptions. His mistakes contributed to Texas’ loss to its rival, who was an inferior opponent going into kickoff.

The Longhorns host the Florida Gators at noon ETon Saturday, Oct. 17 (ABC).
