Paul Finebaum has been following the feud between Mark Stoops and John Calipari closely over the past few days.

And, the SEC Network host has had plenty of people calling in to his afternoon talk show to discuss the drama in Lexington.

So, does he think Calipari is delusional for calling Kentucky a basketball school? Finebaum didn’t hold back during an appearance on “McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning” on WJOX (via On3 Sports):

โ€œHe might, because sometimes I think you can be delusional in the moment,โ€ย Finebaum said. โ€œAnd listen, I donโ€™t need to explain Kentucky basketball. But you and I understand in 2022 when billion dollar deals are being made across the board, itโ€™s about football. Itโ€™s not about basketball. You might have legitimately been able to have heard Mike Krzyzewski say a year ago that weโ€™re a basketball school. But even atย Dukeย today you probably couldnโ€™t make that statement and you certainly canโ€™t make it at Kentucky.โ€

As for the future of Kentucky basketball, Finebaum said perhaps it’s time for a change of head coach:

โ€œIt is the biggest story in the SEC right now because it came out of left field and it came at a time where we shouldโ€™ve been celebrating Kentucky basketball. They had the stage to themselves, four days in the Bahamas and Calipari blew it. Quite frankly, I donโ€™t know where he goes to get it back. Just listening to our audience, and we have a lot of Kentucky fans that call in, theyโ€™re very mixed on him right now.

โ€œI mean are you guys telling me you canโ€™t find a coach better than John Calipari right now? Billy Donovan? Iโ€™m just throwing a name out there. A young coach who is up-and-coming? Take your pick. John Calipari is really no longer the best option for the University of Kentucky.โ€

Can Calipari make amends with the right people in Lexington? Or, is his tenure now heading down a rocky path? We’ll see what happens in the coming weeks and months.
