Paul Finebaum tells Florida fans they’re lucky to have Jon Sumrall, not Lane Kiffin

The Florida Gators were in hot pursuit of Lane Kiffin in the latter half of the 2025 college football season. They ultimately came up short in their quest and watched Kiffin head to the LSU Tigers. However, Paul Finebaum believes this wound up being a positive development.
During the opening minutes of SEC Nation on Saturday, Finebaum told the Gators’ crowd they were “lucky” to have head coach Jon Sumrall leading their program instead of Lane Kiffin.
“You have no idea how lucky you are,” Finebaum said. “You have Jon Sumrall and not Lane Kiffin.”
Sumrall, who came to Gainesville from Tulane, technically already has a leg up on Kiffin. He won his first SEC matchup as Florida’s head coach last weekend, prevailing 44-39 on the road against the Auburn Tigers. While Sumrall’s Gators were putting up points on The Plains, Kiffin’s Tigers were falling to the Ole Miss Rebels — Florida’s Week 4 foe — in Oxford.
Despite the Rebels’ victories over LSU and Louisville, the Gators are favored to beat them in their Saturday afternoon affair. Sumrall would almost officially stamp himself as the long-term solution in The Swamp with a win. Ole Miss and Florida kick off at 3:30 p.m. ET (ABC).
