Pete Golding explains why he didn’t have LSU game ‘circled’

The No. 4-ranked Ole Miss Rebels are coming off a massive upset win over former head coach Lane Kiffin and the LSU Tigers last weekend in one of the most anticipated matchups in recent memory.
Kiffin’s replacement, former Rebs defensive coordinator Pete Golding, led the Rebs in knocking off his former boss, further endearing himself to Ole Miss fans across the country in the process.
Despite all of the passion and build-up that went into this instant classic, though, Golding said on Wednesday that he never had the LSU game “circled” on his calendar heading into the season.
“I know everybody else had that game circled. I didn’t,” Golding said Wednesday. “I mean, there’s nothing about winning a game in September that makes your season.”

This comes on the heels of Kiffin saying that the Rebels won the game because they viewed it as their “Super Bowl,” a comment that implied Golding’s squad did, in fact, have the LSU game circled.
It seems unlikely that Ole Miss viewed this high-stakes showdown against the Bayou Bengals as “just another game,” but at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter much. Golding is correct: a win in September seldom makes a team’s season, even if that win was sweeter than he or his players want to admit.
