Philip Rivers is one of the most famous players to ever come from NC State, as he left Raleigh to go on and have a Hall of Fame-caliber career in the NFL.
In his post-playing days, he has gotten into coaching, even getting an interview with the Buffalo Bills this past offseason.
With Dave Doeren being fired by NC State on Saturday, Rivers is expected to be a candidate for the head coaching position. That’s according to a report from ESPN’s Pete Thamel:
Rivers has coached at the high school level with St. Michael Catholic High School in Alabama.
During his four seasons, he threw for 13,484 yards, 95 touchdowns, and 34 interceptions. He had his jersey retired, and was named the ACC Offensive Player of the Year in 2003.
He was infamously drafted by the New York Giants with the No. 4 pick in the 2004 NFL Draft, but was instantly traded to San Diego as Eli Manning refused to play for the Chargers.
During his time in the NFL, he played with the Chargers from 2004 to 2019, while also playing for the Indianapolis Colts in 2020 and 2025. In his NFL career, he threw for 63,984 yards, 425 touchdowns, and 212 interceptions. He ranks eighth all-time in career yards and seventh in touchdowns.
One thing to look out for with Rivers is that his son is one of the top quarterback prospects in the 2027 class, and he is committed to NC State.
