After police detained Sherrone Moore, the former Michigan coach was arrested and booked into county jail. Despite the latest legal developments, there are still only a few details being reported on the incident that led to Moore’s firing and arrest.

The established timeline is that police are investigating an alleged assault that occurred at 4:10 p.m. ET on Wednesday. By 4:40 p.m., multiple outlets reported that Moore had been fired for cause. Later Wednesday evening, Moore was detained. He was eventually arrested and booked into county jail, records show.

Responding to media inquiries, Pittsfield Township Police released a statement on the matter.

“The Pittsfield Police Department responded to the above location at the above date and time for the purposes of investigating an alleged assault,” the Wednesday evening statement reads. “The Department has received multiple media requests for information. A suspect in this case was taken into custody. This incident does not appear to be random in nature, and there appears to be no ongoing threat to the community. The suspect was lodged at the Washtenaw County Jail pending review of charges by the Washtenaw County Prosecutor. At this time, the investigation is ongoing. Given the nature of the allegations, the need to maintain the integrity of the investigation, and its current status at this time, we are prohibited from releasing additional details. Further details regarding the incident will be released as soon as permissible.”

In a statement, Michigan said that Moore was fired due to credible evidence that the coach was engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staffer. Moore had an 18-8 record as Michigan’s head coach in 2024 and ’25 plus a ’23 game in Jim Harbaugh’s absence.
