Rapid Reaction: No. 1 Georgia overwhelms Florida in annual Cocktail Party

There was a brief moment where Florida caused Georgia fans to hold their collective breath on Saturday in Jacksonville. And just as quickly, that moment was gone.
Georgia rode a dominant first half and hung on late for a 42-20 win over the Gators, its second in a row in the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party and 5th in the past 6 seasons. The win maintained the Bulldogs’ undefeated record and likely ensured they would remain No. 1 for their showdown with division rival Tennessee (ranked No. 3 going into Saturday’s game against Kentucky) next week.
Florida, meanwhile, lost its 4th game of the season and fell to .500, leaving itself on the brink of bowl eligibility with games against Texas A&M, No. 25 South Carolina and Florida State still on the schedule.
Georgia erupted in the first half behind a combination of dominant defense and big-play offense, scoring 21 unanswered points for a 21-0 lead early in the second quarter. Daijun Edwards and Kenny McIntosh both notched short touchdown runs, and quarterback Stetson Bennett hit tight end Brock Bowers for a 73-yard touchdown pass to put the game firmly in the Bulldogs’ control.
The Georgia defense forced punts on each of Florida’s first 5 drives. It allowed a field goal in the first half, but forced another punt before the break to make it 6 punts in 7 total drives.
The Bulldogs took a 28-3 lead into halftime – comfortable, but a bad omen for many in the state of Georgia.
Stress levels increased throughout a third quarter in which Florida outscored Georgia 17-7. The Bulldogs turned the ball over on back-to-back drives, giving the Gators short fields that they converted into 10 points to cut the Georgia lead to 28-20 with 3:31 left in the third quarter.
Gators quarterback Anthony Richardson escaped trouble on a 3rd-and-6 from the Florida 22 and found receiver Xzavier Henderson behind the Georgia secondary for a 78-yard touchdown pass. Richardson finished with 271 passing yards.
In need of a response, however, Georgia scored touchdowns on its next two drives, a 22-yard run by Edwards and a 4-yard run for McIntosh. Both notched multi-touchdown days, and Edwards became Georgia’s first 100-yard rusher in a game in the 2022 season. The Dawgs ran for 240 yards and 4 scores.
Bowers notched over 150 yards and a touchdown receiving, and Bennett, less efficient than normal, still recorded over 300 yards and a pair of touchdowns passing.
Richardson, who has struggled passing all year completing only just over 56 percent of his throws, had a solid game. He still only completed around half but had over 200 yards passing and a touchdown.
Now, Georgia turns its attention to No. 3 Tennessee, which plays No. 19 Kentucky tonight in another SEC East showdown. Should Tennessee hang on for the win, it will set up the highest-ranked contest between the rival Bulldogs and Vols. The winner will have the inside track at the division championship, a berth in the conference championship and a likely trip to the College Football Playoff.
High stakes in the second half of this college football season.
