Because of Georgia’s lackluster showing on offense against Clemson last week, there are questions about whether the Bulldogs can get over the top against another Playoff-caliber team this season.

ESPN broadcasters Rece Davis and David Pollack discussed the issue on the ESPN College Football Podcast, and how much Kirby Smart plays a factor knowing the defensive-minded head coach has a very strong defense this season.

“I suspect that Kirby wants to loosen the reins,” Davis said. “I will need to see that he will do what Nick Saban has done and actually loosen the reins, and whether JT Daniels can execute at that level to make it worth it. Saban loosened the reins when he had Tua and Mac Jones and now Bryce Young.”

Pollack is optimistic, but knows there’s room to grow.

“I think he will,” Pollack said. “I think he wanted to loosen the reins, but you’re right, when you get into a game, and you’re like ‘My defense is absolutely eating them up’ I don’t think they had the opportunity. JT Daniels will be the question for me. Is he closer to Jake Fromm, which I love Jake Fromm, awesome kid, very smart, very cerebral, got them in the right plays, not overly talented, or is he closer to a Tua (Tagovailoa) or a Mac Jones.”
